tear jerkers

one of my favorite things of the film experience, the response they evoke from me. laughter, sadness, thought, perspective...I could go on.

listening to some tunes this am, found myself thinking of the films that move me to tears.

at the moment, two stand out vividly-Longtime Companion and Running on Empty. actually, it's the last scene in each. with Longtime Companion, when all the people who had passed suddenly appear on the beach. that song! every time I hear it, it just kills me! in Running on Empty, when the parents say goodbye to the River Phoenix character, while Fire and Rain is playing in the background. whew! makes me a bit tight just thinking about it...actually, the very last scene in Barton Fink brings tears only because it's one of the best timed edits, EVER.

what are your favorite films that bring tears no matter how many times you see them? the ones that touch that special spot in your heart?

      > omg Nina - GREAT thread!

      thanks!

how could I forget Empire of the Sun?? especially towards the end, when he's standing there and raises his hand in salute. geez!!! what a powerful f-ing moment.

I remember when I first saw Velvet Goldmine and realize-that's the little kid from Empire of the Sun?? no way! it just seemed like no time had passed between films. and here he was, completely grown and magnificent.

every time terms of endearment is on i watch it and every time i cry.
        1. when the 2 little boys reluctantly say goodbye to their mommy in the hospital
        2. when winger dies and shirley macclaine breaks down in jeff daniel's arms

those 2 scenes always get me....

~ Dead Poet's Society - when the students stand on their chairs to salute their "captain"

~ Braveheart - when William gives the dried flower he'd preserved all those years to Murron and when he cries "freeeeedom" at the end

~ The Fifth Element - when Dallas tells LuLu he loves her

there are others...those just popped into my tired brain...

AG: I'm with you on all three of these...

I think the moment that really got me was when the kid commits suicide. it's not that it was unexpected, it just really felt like I was there with him taking that journey through his pain. that final release, well...wow.

Beaches, Lonesome Dove, La Bamba, Fried Green Tomatoes, and The King and I. Those five movies always have the power to make me cry my little heart out. They are the only movies that no matter how often I watch them I am guaranteed to bawl.

Not a fan of the genre, typically, but I just saw a great one: "Liam." Top-shelf Frears. Oh, and "An American Werewolf in London" was pretty good, too...

I cry at almost any scrap of sentimentality, even sometimes against my better judgement, (like when I was watching "Maid In Manhattan" at 4:30 in the morning because there was nothing else on! I was desperate! UGH!)

Anyway, I am one of those kleenex-clutchers to be sure!

I cry when someone dies or people express their love for eachother, or it's really romantic or they have just overcome a huge obstacle...stuff like that...I'm just a cryer.

I cried in all three LOTR movies, Titanic, Fifth Element, Heavenly Creatures, Sid & Nancy, Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge, etc. and the most recently viewed movie that just absolutely DESTROYED me (red eyes, runny nose, whole roll of toilet paper for kleenex) was "Dil Chahta Hai". I was a mess!

Omigod I just remembered a good one. In that movie "Orlando" where Tilda Swinton plays different incarnations of the same man through history and then finally becomes a woman in one life and has a child. In the closing scene she and her shild are sitting under a tree and an angel appears in the sky and is singing to her and she starts crying with joy. Her child asks her why she's sad and she smiles and says, she's not...she's happy, (because she's FINALLY happy after all the lives her soul has lived.)
Oh man, I'm getting all teary just thinking about that!

if you EVER get a chance to meet Tilda Swinton all I have to say is...errr...mmmm...OH MY! she is THE most amazing actor and person I have EVER had the luck to hear speak about film in my life. ever. perdiod. Coppola, Scorcesse and John Woo (met them and conversed with all) combined do not come anywhere near CLOSE to her most incredible presence.

There are loads. I'm a soppy bugger. But the one that does it without fail is 'Brassed Off'. Several points in the film. Stephen Tomkinson's attempted suicide. Pete Postlethwaite being seranaded by the colliery band while in hospital. But most of all, his speech at the Royal Albert Hall.

But then, the town I grew up in saw the start of the Miner's Strike on which the film was based.. I saw what happened when they closed all three pits down and left the town to die. So, the subject matter is a little too close for comfort.

                Moulin Rouge definitely
Blow Out -- I cry at the end every time I've watched it
In the Name of the Father
Untamed Heart -- my exboyfriend almost started crying
                Bed of Roses
                The English Patient
                Men Don't Leave
                Frances
                The Sheltering Sky
                Muriel's Wedding
                Strictly Ballroom
                Sometimes -- Vertigo
The Grifter's -- the last scene with Angelica Huston and John Cusack
An Officer and a Gentleman -- David Keith is amazing and so sad in it...
                Less than Zero

                Some oldies
                Now Voyager
                The Old Maid
                The Red Shoes

Okay you all can think this is as bizarre as you want to but the final scene in Todd Hayne's Superstar: The Karen Carpenter story. It's a testament to his talent as a director...

I went to Terms of Endearment with my mother. She was almost hysterical crying. Kept trying to say I was the Debra Winger character. Me not so much. I felt very manipulated by the film...
