After missing this at the movie theatre (yes, another one!) I picked this up at the local video store (why do we still refer to it as such when the majority of films are now on DVD?) and watched this last night.
Personally, I thought it was great filmmaking on any number of levels. The acting was great. Carrey was a revelation, proving that he *can* act and not just overact. Kate Winslet's performance made *me* fall a little bit in love with her. And the supporting cast were uniformly outstanding.
As for the cinematography, Gondry appears to have made the transition from music videos and commercials to the big screen with some degree of elan.
And Charlie Kaufman's script proved as reliable as ever in it's surrealist twists.
And hey, for once, we didn't get the pat Hollywood, happy ever after ending.

Re: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Fri, December 3, 2004 - 4:02 PMI missed it in theaters as well and saw it on DVD. I thought it was very moving and creatively done.
I thought the ending WAS happy! It was so sweet for them to realize they'd do it all again even if the outcome was gonna be the same. Totally made me cry. -

Sun, December 19, 2004 - 1:24 PMFinally got this from Netflix and have had it for about a week, watched it at least 5 times.
It's beautiful and heartbreaking and lovely and sad. It made me long for someone who may be pulling a Clementine on me.
I thought the ending was sorta hopeful. They knew from listening to the tapes that they'd hurt each other before, admitted they might do it again, but seemed willing to go for it again anyway.
One of the better films I've seen.
