I loved this film and hope it marks our crawl out of the cinematic slump we seem to be mired in. Nick Cave doesn't give anything easily, you gotta work for it. So, what opinions are flying out there? Has anyone SEEN it? I think this film resists the bushranger mythology and the typical costume dramatics of Australia's colonial past. As for the violence, what do you expect when a people arrives to 'civilise' such a country? Hence the landscape seems almost a character itself in the film. I love how Cave, as the screenwriter, has deliberately avoided all the obvious and easy paths, hence the film is uncompromising and the violence is a no-brainer. I think this film is also about family and loyalty. Look what happens to ALL the families in the film, note also that there are no children (apart from town extras). I'd be interested to hear what others have to say. I don't pretend to understand all this film's nuances, but it was great to be challenged for once and I'm definitely lining up to see it again. Good one Nick.
