      just saw pt. 1
niice! looking forward to pt. 2

i love the intentionally bad stuff (e.g., intro, freeze frames w/corny music.) definitely cartoonish violence.

I have to finally admit, as much as I dislike Tarantino for who he seems to be in real life, I have really enjoyed his films- Kill Bill, nad Jackie Brown included. It's because I'm sort of a pop-culture snob too.

I loved Pulp Fiction... but to me the films he has done since don't hold a candle to that film. I feel sometimes as if it's not even the same filmmaker.

i thought his best work was reservoir dogs. jackie brown left me cold but i did enjoy kill bill 1. it wasn't very tight in parts, but parts that worked, worked really well. and i have to say, i do love his sense of humour.

I just recently watch Kill Bill 1 as well and, although, It's not my fave Tarantino film, I definiitely enjoyed it. Resevoir Dogs is still my fave. And I'm looking forward to Kill Bill 2 for Michael Madson's part. Why that man isn't in more films is beyond me.

Tarantino... blah. He's occasionally funny, but too obviously trying to titillate us and be cool, and nothing else. There is a filmmaker that is completely irrelevant to the grand scheme of things. I mean, really, all of his films scream "pubescent male". Boys bore me, I prefer the work of grown-up men and women (Hal HArtley, Wong Kar-Wai, Stanley Kubrick, Jane Campion... and so forth). All people with things to say, not just trying to be shocking and cool.
Just my opinion, don't shoot me for it...

You won't be shot. I don't think he is the greatest either I just find most of his movies enjoyable. While I do search for a movie that makes me think every once in a while, I don't think movies always have to make a statement.

i used to get into arguments w/my ex about this very thing.

sometimes a film's only goal is entertainment, and that's ok. most people want escapist fare because their lives are so entrapping--that's ok, too.

so q is self-conscioulsy "hip." most people making films for the lion's share of his audience aren't trying to challenge them AT ALL. he at least has a few quirks that make his storylines a little crooked. to me "kill bill" just showed that quentin loves cheesy films, and wants to take all the good stuff about them (fun, excitement) and put that in a clean "suit" rather than holey jeans.

I am very down with you on this. I used to argue and write long diatribes about QT on a Hal Hartley email list.

While I can see the entertaining argument for QT, I have a problem with the underlying visciousness. I love violence in movies, don't get me wrong. But the "edginess" that QT puts in his films is just fucked-up:

Pulp Fiction - the whole use of the word 'nigger'
Jackie Brown - shooting a woman because she talks too much
Kill Bill series - it is the whole pimp and whore routine that is not a powerful woman. (ie Faster Pussycat - a woman kills because she WANTS TO, not because she was beat down by her pimp. Ms. 45 is a much better film about a woman seeking revenbe, albeit with exploitation problems, a MUCH better film.)

All that said, the second KB is much better than the first, but the subtext is really troublesome for me and Uma pretty much sucks as an actrice in that film.

I have actually never seen Reservoir Dogs all the way through. A few months before it came out, I had an advance video copy of it. I got a bunch of people together to watch it and I ended-up turning it off about half-way through. I watched bits here and there and then was shocked to find suppossedly intelligent people flocking to it. As a result I am extra hard on QT, maybe out of jealously because I would love to be making and referencing exploitation films.

That said, I don't think QT does the referencing and ripping off very well. I did like the old chinese guy in Kill Bill 2, that was really good actually. But the Morricone music from the Leone film WAS THE WORST. Boring and un-emotional. (and an example of that type of thing working well is Election with the Navajo Joe theme on a shot of Witherspoon, that was brilliant. Oh, and I also love the Fellini bit in Election too.)

Anyway, I have ranted this in other tribes so sorry if you are reading my swill again.

For the most part, I'm with you on this one Pink. The worst offender in my eyes is RD. It's not just the QT likes visciousness, but often he goes out of his way to paint the most viscious characters as the coolest ones.

<but often he goes out of his way to paint the most viscious characters as the coolest ones.>

it seems to me that the most vicious character in "dogs" is the michael madsen character. the coolest one (to me at least) is really harvey keitel's guy.

Well of course "cool" in in the eye of the beholder.

              *SPOILERS*

But when Michael Madsen cuts off the cop's ear, he's made to seem as cool as possible - music, shooting, casting, dialogue etc. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about.

well it's definitely played for laughs--i'll give you that.
maybe i'm a heartless bastard, but i was relieved when they offed madsen's character--he was a little *too* crazy.

"dirty harry" is a vicious person that i think is more played as cool--he's a putz and you know it, but you still want him to win...

You mean Dirty Harry as in Dirty Harry (Eastwood, right?)

I agree. The film spoke to me when I was young and couldn't distinguish politics in a film. But Dirty Harry is really a conservative film that advocates abuse and torture and its taking on the "liberals just want a revolving door in our courts". We still see this attitude today on some show that is on the USA network with Chuck Norris. I haven't seen DH in a long time and would be interested to see it again. But up through high school I thought that he was cool. Also interesting is Denzel's newest Man on Fire which really advocates torture as a means to extract information. It is a weak film, but I am amazed that something like that could be made today and released to the mainstream public. I am not anti-violence in movies, in fact I think that is where violence belongs, but there are lots of different kinds of violence and politics surrounding it. In Man on Fire it is disturbing. hmmm maybe this should be a different thread....

the chuck norris show you're referring to is "walker, texas ranger." that's on network tv, too--but at some ridiculous hour when i'm awake and the rest of the world is in bed.

honestly, my main beef with "walker" is that it's a terrible show period. the acting and writing are as stiff as chuck's kung fu (or is it karate?)

I agree re Madson. I think, I'm not SURE, but does he do a voice over for Animal Precinct, that show about rescuing animals? I love the guy, he's got that brooding darkness to him and he's definitely underused

Kill bill vol 1 is ok not very impressive but ok. I did enjoy Pulp fiction despite the gratuitious violence because it was creative. But in Kill Bill Vol 2 QT is really mocking us.
    *** spoiler ***
What up with the Martial art master and the cheesy music, the only fun part is the second murder in the mobile home.
the ending make you wonder want 2 moviesworth of your life back.
If I want to see profusion of blood and irreverence I see a Takashi Miike movie not a QT.

      Finally saw KB 2... okay...

I HATED KB 1.... but I REALLY LIKED KB 2. There was a story. There were interesting characters and fun twists. Michael Madsen, who usally phones it in, was great. And David Carradine was amazing.

I thought the "Martial art master and the cheesy music" was great cheesy fun. That could be said for all of Kill Bill 2. My advice... skip the first one.... you don't need it.

                  i meant that movies
especially if you're as crazed as i am
                  are an investment
i wasn't trying to insult you though
remember tones is lost in type

though it is true that i don't assign unnecessary value
                  to time
but that's another story all together

some investments are better than others. back to the topic at hand, i'll probably see it cuz i'm interested, but i'm pretty picky about the movies i see, just like i would be about money i invest.

                      i can understand that
sometimes for me its even a good idea
to see a movie that doesn't work
this way i can look at it and see why it
                      doesn't work
look to avoid that in films where i am both spectator
                      and filmmaker
