......so I just wandered into this movie not knowing what to expect and was more than drawn in. Definitely a film that captures the Warhol era. Though Edie is the focus, it seems to be in a way, actually in a warhol kind of way, really a film about him. Though Warhol comes off negatively in contrast to Dylan, it works in the sense that this "factory" world was so much what Warhol was trying to convey in his work. Though I think too many confuse Warhol's art with him, I doubt he was as "plastic" as the film portrays him. I love Dylan as much as anyone, and the juxtapostition of the two was certainly interesting, but it did seem just a little slanted.

Okay, so reading over this, it sounds a bit negative, but I really liked the film.

Hi,

I'm helping to promote the indie film, East Broadway. The writer/director/star, Fay Ann Lee, is working hard right now to get a distribution deal to get the film in theaters and needs emails to print and take along to a meeting with a distributor THIS Wednesday (10/18/06). If you have a moment, please check out the website: http://www.eastbroadwaythemovie.com and if the film appeals to you, please follow the instructions below from an email Fay recently sent out. Also, even if the film is not your cup of tea, please, please pass this info along to anyone whom you think might like it!

Thanks a million.
E.S. Putnam

****

EB is now at a critical juncture. We've been approached by an interested distributor who is asking me to show them a fan base. So, here is how you can help --

Tell 5 of your friends about East Broadway and ask them to check out the website. If they think this film is something they might enjoy, have them write to eastbroadwaymovie@gmail.com to tell us that. We need to show that this is a movie with broad appeal. If I get enough support through word-of-mouth, we will be able to get this movie released. But time is of the essence. I need to basically print out a ton of e-mails in the next 4 days so that I can take them to a meeting early next week.

And, if you can, please write to us with the following important information:

1. Where are you from? (so that we can show where else other than NY/L.A. we would release the film)
2. Why does this film appeal to you?
3. Do you think this film would be appealing to your friends and family?
4. Tell your friends to keep introducing the film to 5 friends and have them write to us at eastbroadwaymovie@gmail.com

Again, your e-mails have been a wonderful surprise and so very much welcomed. This grassroots campaigning becomes the most important marketing strategy of all for independent films, so thank you all for being a huge part of this momentum.

Many many thanks,
Fay Ann Lee

One Night With the King is an epic motion picture set in an ancient and exotic world of adventure, intrigue and romance, that follows a young Jewish orphan who rises from peasant to Queen of Persia only to face the annihilation of her people.

Beautifully shot by Cinematographer Steven Bernstein (Like Water, For Chocolate; Monster, etc.) it is shot completely on location in Rajasthan, India. There were no sets, just magnificent real places like the palace, which is breathtaking. They used candles and torches to light most of the film – very little electric light. Every costume is hand made and amazing. Basically, it sounds like the entire film is a piece of art. :)

has anyone seen this film? did it even get a release in the US?

the film in question is quite a stark, almost bleak, portrayal of a couple who meet, once a week, for quiet, practically anonymous sex in a cheap, dirty flat.

both of the main protagonists, played by mark rylance and kerry fox, are married to other people, and as the film progresses their lives become more and more entwined. in one scene, rylance's character explains to fox's husband (played by timothy spall) all about his sexual set-up, knowing full well with whom he is speaking.

however, most people know this film for another reason - the sex scenes. this was, as far as i recall, the first mainstream film to get a uk cinema release with such graphic sexual depiction left uncut.

fox and rylance were dating at the time of filming and the director persuaded them to 'act as if the camera wasn't there.' so, unlike many cinematic sex scenes, there is honesty and authenticity.

when these people fuck, it's not soft-focus. there is cellulite, there is awkwardness and clumsiness. indeed, there is penetration and fellatio. but it's done in a way that means any titillation comes a very distant second to a feeling of unease watching these scenes. the viewer is left feeling voyeuristic, and maybe even a little dirty, like they've been caught snatching a glimpse.

if you get the chance, you should watch this film. despite the furore surrounding it's content, it remains, for me, an eminently intimate and well realised portrayal of the anatomy of infidelity.

Furter was being played by a woman not a man in drag...so specifically i remember the Time Warp sequence, then as the play ends & the actors come out to take a bow, the audience throws flowers on the stage.
on another evening i dreamed of attending a showing of Faster Pussycat Kill Kill in a now-defunct moviehouse here in Santa Barbara...& it was in color, not b&w as it exists in waking life.

I loved this film and hope it marks our crawl out of the cinematic slump we seem to be mired in. Nick Cave doesn't give anything easily, you gotta work for it. So, what opinions are flying out there? Has anyone SEEN it? I think this film resists the bushranger mythology and the typical costume dramatics of Australia's colonial past. As for the violence, what do you expect when a people arrives to 'civilise' such a country? Hence the landscape seems almost a character itself in the film. I love how Cave, as the screenwriter, has deliberately avoided all the obvious and easy paths, hence the film is uncompromising and the violence is a no-brainer. I think this film is also about family and loyalty. Look what happens to ALL the families in the film, note also that there are no children (apart from town extras). I'd be interested to hear what others have to say. I don't pretend to understand all this film's nuances, but it was great to be challenged for once and I'm definitely lining up to see it again. Good one Nick.

For more information contact: pete@galaxie-pictures.com

SYNOPSIS:

Teenage Sherri, a new arrival to Lake Charles, Louisiana, gets a rude awakening as the locals give her a slice of real Southern hospitality, small town style. Included in her Lake Charles initiation are some hard lessons on friendship, family, and bigotry—not the kind made of ephemeral remarks and incidental ostracizing of outsiders, but real and vicious institutional racism, the kind that ends in murder.

Sherri arrives as the locals prepare for the funeral of Mary, the town’s Contraband Days Celebration Queen. With her death begins the shattering of the perfect picture of southern hospitality that she represents. Grieving is glossed over in favor of panic about the town’s quickly evaporating marijuana supply. What’s really died is the smiling welcoming south, and its warmth and hospitality are quickly replaced by a rapid growth of weeds.

Then the ensemble cast of Unfiltered gradually unwinds into a hard picture of gritty southern life as facades of tolerance gradually peel / crumble away. What’s revealed is the stuff that’s usually swept under the carpet.

while i enjoyed Land, the very first one, NIght of the Living Dead, remains my favorite...& other than that, Romero has made other movies that are bona fide horror classics, interesting for reasons additional to the fact that they're scarey. Martin, for instance, is my *favorite* vampire movie, hands down...it just has such great characters & subtext elements, & is actually, to me, more sad than scarey.

If you're a fan of independent film and happen to be in the Boston area, check out the event going on Sunday, March 20 at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge. It's called Chlotrudis Awards, and it's basically a little Indy Spirit Awards on the east coast honoring the best of last year's indie films and guest filmmakers in an irreverant and quirky manner. This year's guests include Lucas Belvaux, Belgian director whose French films, ON THE RUN, AN AMAZING COUPLE, and AFTER THE LIFE were released last year; Ellen Page, 17-year-old Canadian actress who starred in WILBY WONDERFUL and MARION BRIDGE, and will soon be shaking up the world with HARD CANDY; and John O'Brien, Vermont director whose Tunbridge Trilogy, VERMONT IS FOR LOVERS, A MAN WITH A PLAN and NOSEY PARKER blend real actors and residents of his hometown in charming and startling ways. More information can be found at the our, <a href="www.chlotrudis.org">www.chlotrudis.org</a>.

Thanks for your time...

Personally, I thought it was great filmmaking on any number of levels. The acting was great. Carrey was a revelation, proving that he *can* act and not just overact. Kate Winslet's performance made *me* fall a little bit in love with her. And the supporting cast were uniformly outstanding.

As for the cinematography, Gondry appears to have made the transition from music videos and commercials to the big screen with some degree of elan.

And Charlie Kaufman's script proved as reliable as ever in it's surrealist twists.

They call me a snob. Say that I don't like mainstream movies mostly because they are mainstream.

There maybe some truth in that but there have been some mainstream movies that I liked. Election and The Long Kiss Goodnight come to mind.

But I also like Pixar films. Even though Finding Nemo is ultimately kinda cheesy, I still liked it.

Pixar just delivers on the goods from beginning to end. Starting of course with the performances but then down to the production design, that is decidedly different in each film (no Disneyification of characters across different movies.)

Is this soley due to the nature of computer animation. That can't be entirely the case because Shrek II sure did suck ass. But does computer animation give them the ability to get it right. Of course someone has to decide what getting it right is. With The Incredibles it is good to see that there is someone other than Lassiter involved.

But it does just seem that there is quality control involved. And integrity. Even though I could choose to look at some problems in The Incredibles (ie the depiction of jewish characters) the story itself is so thoroughly entertaining that I let all that other stuff slip.

Aside from facing another 4 years of Bush II, nothing bums me out more than people who are fans of quarter-ass entertainment. Like Van Helsing. I mean, jeez give me something to care about. I admit that I did approve of the Frankenstein character in the film and wish that it were about him than all that other stoopid stuff. But the success of Van Helsing surely has to be a result of TV and of dumbing down of the audience.

It is enerving to have friends that are hard core indie music geeks. Like if a CD is even next to a major label CD on the shelf at the store it must not be cool anymore. Brtiney Spears are words that are not in their vocabulary. Yet, damn it if they are still lamenting the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

But back to movies. When i saw the preview for the Polar Express two years ago or so I said to myself - "That movie is going to suck." I knew it two years ago and it really doesn't look like they have bothered to do anything to make sure that it doesn't suck. In fact the characters in that thing look like they should be in the Macy's Xmas window display.

I know that all movies can't be great. But it would be nice if the majority of them at least had some integrity.

It's amazing what Pixar has done. Make good movies AND make money. What a concept!

Great performances, powerful storyline, if only a little disturbing.
However, I found myself wondering at the end, once more, whether individuals of a certain mindset (nazis, KKK, BNP etc) could take Derek's change of attitude as a catalyst to question their own values, or whether the death of Danny at the denouement would simply act as a confirmation for their hatred of others.
I suppose it's just an extension of the old argument as to whether TV and film have the power to corrupt. My attitude has always been that perhaps it has, but only with those individuals who were seeking corruption, who looked for an excuse for their misbehaviour.
But then, what do I know?

This is a very intense and wonderful movie. It probably won't last very long in any city it plays being over shadowed by that meddlesome webslinger and Mr. Moore's magna opus. But don't let this film slip by!

If i say anything about it, it gives away one of the most interesting aspects of the film (I saw it last year, completely cold while I was in Paris). Every review and synopsis I have read gives it away too. What I can say is it is a drama and involves a family going to their vacation house and finding it isn't the heaven they thought it was.

That covers the first 10 minutes. It is less shocking and assaulting than his previous films but is striking nonetheless.

If you love film, then do yourself a favor and check this one out before it goes away.

I asked my friend if his kid was watching Thunderbirds yet (the original british series) and he said no it was too violent. I was sort of shocked to hear Thunderbirds described that way, but I could see what he was saying.

Dawn of the Dead was great, even when it had an obviously subversive scene SPOILER of shooting celebrities in the head. But I found the revenge motivated torture in Man on Fire rather appalling, but appalling because I was cheering for Denzel and got sucked into the narrative a bit.

I read an interview a while ago in Video Watchdog with an Italian director who made a bunch of slasheresque genre pictures in the 80s. He said he was really apalled (ok, ok, word of the day, i just got up) at Raiders of the Lost Arc when the audience cheers when Indy shoots the guy with the sword. He said something like in his films he isn't making anyone cheer for violence. (Though some of the freaks that see slasher films are pretty questionable.)

I don't really have a question for y'all, but I am interested in discussing and breaking down the idea of violence in film.

i'm very glad i saw Badasssss & highly recommend it to any thinking mature person. i knew about its subject matter before seeing the movie but so far have never seen either Sweetback nor any other films made by Van Peebles the younger or elder...but now i'm VERY EAGER to do so! Melvin & Mario are inspiring people whose creations remain timely & relevant.

I don't know how I missed it for so long, but last night, I finally saw "Chopper."

Starring "The Hulk's" Eric Bana as the eponymous anti-hero Mark 'Chopper' Reid, the film looks at a dramatised account of the Australian criminal turned author/artist's early life.

Now, only knowing Bana from Ang Lee's take on "The Hulk," I wasn't expecting great things. But he was a revelation. He captured the psychotic, devil-may-care attitude of the title role with some accuracy. And he did it in such a way that, even though you knew you shouldn't feel anything other than loathing for the brawling, maiming, killing, woman beater, you find yourself warming to "Chop Chop."

It is a harsh, violent portrayal of a less than conventional life, but it draws you in and takes you along for the white-knuckle ride.

If you haven't seen it, do so. If only to see why Mr Bana should be doing a lot better work than he has recently.

Greg - "actually the acting was stilted on purpose it was supposed to be reminiscent of old nazi propaganda films"

Donielle - "I guess that makes it a good film then, eh?"

In my opinion, what makes Starship Troopers a good film is that it works as a well produced, well shot cartoon Sci Fi action film, with revolutionary special effects, and at the same time, if you look deeper, it works on a whole other, subversive level. The film goes out of its way to undermine its own seemingly mindless, pop-corn nature, by creating a scathing dialogue between Rah-Rah patriotism, and the idea that it is unlikely that any adversary is truly, one hundred percent "evil". Because of this, if you are watching carefully, you come across with the message that no matter how much the enemy in painted as soulless "alien bugs" who don't deserve any sympathy or consideration, the truth is much more nuanced. (Sound like a worthwhile, timely message?)

Most viewers don't catch this basic message, because the film rides very successfully on two genres - 1) Alien invasion and pop-corn space battle movies (especially of the 50's - which were metaphors for 50's atomic era communist threat) and, 2) war propaganda movies (American and German) - both of which go out of their way to have a glossy and over-simplistic take on "right and wrong", "good and evil". Distracted by this, viewers miss many of the following details:

- The human army is repeatedly compared to the Nazis.

- The humans invaded the aliens' land first.

- (From what I remember) The humans live in a world where only soldiers are allowed the right to vote. (Yikes.)

- The whole justification of the war is that "bugs" are stupid and have no feelings, and therefore they have no right to fight the humans or resist occupation. HOWEVER we learn that the aliens are smart, and at the end of the film the humans discover that the "brain bug" feels fear. The soldiers rejoice over this, completely forgetting that in the beginning they justified their actions for an entirely different reason (sound like a recent war we know of?), in this case that they thought the "bugs" had no feelings at all.

So, while I don't think you have to see this movie as one of the best films of all time Donielle, I suggest it might merit a little reconsideration.

It made me want to watch more of his films and now he's trying to release 'Fahrenheit 911.' Never have I wanted to see a film more than now, even more so because they (Mickey Eisner) are trying to suppress the release of it. Mainly because since Disney (World) is in Florida, he doesn't want to offend the Bush administration. We have George Dubya's brother as our Governor.

Bowling had a lot of interesting veiwpoints and angles, detailed conversations with misc. persons dealing with the Oklahoma bombing, the Columbine shooting, executives from Lockheed Martin and K-mart, Charlton Heston and Dick Clark (in which he lived up to his name).

Was anyone else moved by this film or have any kind of major change of thought of how this government has so much control? I can't help but notice that everywhere in the world where there's a ratio of guns to people, their gun murders range in the 200-300's. Some can't recall the last time it happened, but know one occured in the past three years. America's rate was over 11000! Yet, we all have mix cultures living together, have a lot of guns per household, etc.

What makes us different?

OK, at this point I'm rambling on and that is a discussion for another day.
i pay money to the scumbag murdoch and his sky corporation for their numerous film channels, because aside from the vampires at film 4, who only have 3 channels, show the same movies over and over again and don't operate during daylight, they are the only scumbags who can satiate my need for cinematic entertainment 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

but then, on weekends like this, practically every channel is devoted to either 'family' entertainment like 'beethoven's 4th' and 'see spot run' or biblical epics such as 'ben hur' or 'the ten commandments'.

so, i went to the local asda (it's english for walmart) and gave more money to another megalomaniac. this time for the dvd of 'life of brian'.
and what a joy it was to watch this again. particularly on easter sunday. it felt even more blasphemous.

i especially enjoyed the whole 'romanes eunt domus' routine and the 'splitters' parody of the palestinian situation. oh, and the 'what have the romans ever done for us?' and the stoning.
Personally, I feel his choice of projects has not given the public the opportunity to see him really shine. Lately, he's been cast in films that for whatever reason, fail to gain much attention. O' Brother didn't fare to well at the box office, thought I thought it brilliant. when he first broke out in Out of Sight, he showed much promise...have not had the chance to see Three Kings, though I hear he's pretty good in that as well.

Anyway, just to let you know about a film which may or may not be appearing at a theatre near you soon.

There's a Brit-flick out called 'Shaun of the Dead' (you see what they did there?), which according to one of the co-writers and stars of the film, is a Zom-Rom-Com. That's a Zombie Romantic Comedy. Which sounds like it could be interesting.

Anyway, it's quite obviously a sardonic piss take of the Zombie flesh eating genre, which is brought to the big screen by the team behind the genius Channel 4 slacker-comedy, "Spaced".

And, remarkably enough, in a British media seemingly hell-bent on destroying the morale of home-grown talent with their sneering, scathing reviews, it has been getting great press.

If you get the chance to see it, you should. Simon Pegg is a comic genius. You'll love him. Or your money back. Probably.
